Taos Academy Charter School is celebrating the addition of a new wellness building and outdoor amphitheater—enhancements that will serve both students and the wider community.

The public is invited to join the celebration Thursday, Aug. 28, at 4 p.m., featuring music by Jimmy Stadler and food from KoKo’s Taco Truck. Campus tours will be available.

While the amphitheater will host school theater and music programs, co-founder and Superintendent Dr. Traci Filiss hopes to expand its use for community performances. “The idea is that our culinary arts students could prepare a meal for an event and watch from the outdoor patio while they eat,” she said.

The campus may also host conferences, kids’ sports camps, and other events with local organizations. “These programs teach life skills—planning a menu on a budget, engaging with adults, and developing resilience when things don’t go perfectly,” said P.E. wellness adviser and community schools liaison Patti Kravitz.

Taos Academy was founded 17 years ago by Filiss and Karin Moulton. “This expansion fulfills the vision we had nearly 20 years ago,” Moulton said. “The amphitheater was a dream from the start, and now it’s real. The campus reflects our philosophy of student-centered education and  holistic programs that support social, emotional, and academic growth.”

Principal Dr. Mae LaBelle said the free public charter school serves grades five through 12 with a hybrid learning model that combines live-taught and online curriculum. Students attend in person two days a week and work from home or at school the other two days during the four-day week. Hands-on classes prepare students for the future.
